SHIP-TO-SHORE
Sailing For Geeks 2 @ Fadaiat
The "S4G-2 : Ship-to-Shore" project took place in the framework of "Fadaiat : freedom of knowledge, freedom of movement" event, a political, technological and artistic laboratory that took place from 17th to 26th of June 2005 in Tarifa (Spain) and Tanger (Morocco) on both sides of the tense frontier dividing Europe from Africa.

The team was divided in two :
- S4G team was crossing the straits on a sailing boat (the Strike Sure) : from Gibraltar (UK) to Ceuta (Spain), Tarifa (Spain), Tanger (Morocco), and back same way.
- Makrolab Team on the shore, set up with computers, Civil Marine Radar (CMR) and radio transceivers, in the Castle Guzman El Bueno, like all participants of Fadaiat event.

Our objectives were to explore physically the straits and its political boundaries ; to experiment the peculiar navigation, the wind and the sea that cause so many deads each year ; to monitor the traffic and the technological apparatus of the straits ; to engage with tracking technologies (GPS tracking softwares, being the boat to track for the Makrolab CMR on shore) ; to test radio communications via VHF from the ship to the shore (including from Tanger to Tarifa) ; to meet Fadaiat media activists in Tanger and investigate the political situation of migrations.
Ultimately "Ship-to-Shore" was a test project for a future ship-to-shore transponder applied to an independant permanent observatory of the Gibraltar Straits. It is a modest contribution to the very important work already engaged by Indymedia estrecho and the Fadaiat team.
By clicking on the photo up here, you can watch a video of VHF call from the sailing boat on Moroccan coast to the team on shore in the Castle Guzman El Bueno of Tarifa. Boat was located at the point marking the entrance of Tangier bay, heading towards Tarifa.
